Appreciation of Song of the Open Road by Ajay Saindane Std. - 12th

Song of the open road 

Poet and title: - The well-known poem ‘Song of the Open Road’ is taken from the collection of “Leaves of Grass written by an American poet Walt Whitman. He was an essayist and journalist. He is often called “The Father of Free Verse.” 

Theme: - The theme of the poem is the journey of life must have freedom and joy. 
 
Poetic Devices: -The poet has used the figure of speech Metaphor, Repetition, Inversion and Paradox to flourish the poem. 

Language and style: - ‘Song of the Open Road’ is narrative poem in the form of ‘free verse’. In this poem the poet uses artistic language. There is no use of rhyming words in the poem. 

Special features: The poem has divided into four separate stanzas with exception of the first stanza. The first stanza of the poem includes only three lines. And remaining stanzas include four lines. It is free verse poem and the lines of the poem are without rhyming words.
